20 Marketing ideas for Valentine’s Day to sell successfully

Just like any major shopping event in the year-round holiday marketing calendar, getting a jump start on your Valentine’s Day marketing ideas can put you ahead.

Here are 20 impactful Valentine’s Day marketing ideas tailored to help you amplify sales during this bustling season.

1. Prepare in time

A man in a dark green shirt sitting in front of a laptop and thinking.

The million-dollar question is when to kick off your Valentine’s Day marketing campaign.

The prime window for Valentine’s Day promotions is from mid-January to early February. Beginning early – right after the winter holidays – offers the advantage of engaging both new and existing customers without blending into the background of Christmas and New Years.

2. Target the right audience

Valentine’s Day shopping has evolved – it’s not just about romantic partners anymore. Tailor your store for diverse shoppers, even those who hate Valentine’s Day. Offer the perfect gift for:

  • Loved ones – best friends, gal pals, and family members to celebrate non-romantic love.
  • Co-workers – a little gift or trendy concept to spread cheer in the office.
  • Pet lovers – who are the top spenders for a non-human demographic on Valentine’s Day.
  • Gifts for the shopper themselves – looking to celebrate self-love.

3. Target last-minute shoppers

Consider offering digital alternatives at a discounted price to cater to last-minute buyers. One idea is to offer digital gift cards to provide an instant solution, but you can use your Valentine’s Day advertising campaign in many ways.

Catering to this segment meets urgent consumer needs and drives additional sales for your business. Remember, in the world of retail, flexibility and customer experience are key.

4. Create a sense of urgency

Spice things up with some FOMO. In an era where customers are flooded with sales pitches, encourage gifting with real bargains to stand out among your competitors.

Consider multiple approaches, such as a countdown timer on your landing page, early access for subscribers, a special event giveaway, a secret promo code, or even a love-themed referral campaign.

Always create compelling call-to-actions (CTAs). A strong CTA, like an indication of limited stock, can prompt immediate action. Effective urgency tactics can increase conversions by up to 332%. Remember that authenticity and clear communication define urgency-based marketing.

5. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with personalized gifts

The charm of Valentine’s Day goes beyond traditional gifts, embracing personalized gift-giving for meaningful relationships. In fact, the personalized gifts market is expected to reach $34.3 billion by 2026.

Convey heartfelt sentiments in a loving and fun way with customized goodies. Consider gift ideas like teddy bears, a custom hoodie, or a t-shirt.

Note that custom products need additional production and delivery times. So, to capitalize on the Valentine’s Day rush, kick off your Valentine’s Day marketing ideas early.

6. Offer free shipping

Free shipping is one of the most enticing incentives you can offer customers during the Valentine’s Day shopping rush, often serving as the deciding factor for many shoppers.

Integrating free shipping creates a win-win situation – your customers enjoy a cost-effective shopping experience, and your business sees an increase in sales and customer satisfaction.

Use this opportunity to promote specific Valentine’s Day products or bundles. Highlighting these items helps customers plan how to spend Valentine’s Day without financial worry.

7. Create Valentine’s Day content to improve SEO

Google Trends shows a surge in web searches for Valentine’s Day gifts at the end of January.

For your Valentine’s Day marketing ideas to rank well during this period, make sure that you:

  • Roll out Valentine-themed content soon after New Year’s to enhance search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Create an engaging storefront filled with distinctive goodies and special events.
  • Write product reviews highlighting top gifts for all demographics, from men and women to pets.
  • Share a Valentine-themed blog post on your store and social media channels to promote self-love and care for others.
  • Use tools like Google Trends and Consumer Barometer to provide insights into search trends surrounding the holiday to optimize keywords, ads, and promotions in real time.

Additionally, consider releasing a curated gift guide showcasing themed products and ideas. This not only attracts new customers but also retains existing ones.

8. Social media platforms matter

Share captivating videos, images, and graphics to help your customers fall in love with your products. Showcase your brand’s romantic side on TikTok and Instagram using user-generated content and alluring product mockups

Feature your products subtly, making them irresistible to Valentine’s Day shoppers. Run polls on Instagram Stories, letting followers vote on their favorite items. Provide easy navigation by embedding direct product links with a discount code, making purchasing fun and simple.

9. Celebrate love with Valentine’s Day hashtags and sounds

Hashtags, once the primary tool for increasing visibility, are now complemented by trending sounds, especially on TikTok.

While using a main hashtag like #ValentinesDay2025 is still helpful to get your content in front of people, the new way to capture attention is using trending sounds that drive engagement.

10. Use email campaigns for Valentine’s Day marketing ideas

Email campaigns are the backbone of any good Valentine’s sale ideas. For every dollar invested in email marketing, the typical return is $36. Pick a click-worthy subject for first-time customers.

What kind of emails should you include in your Valentine’s Day campaign?

  • Promotional. Get the word out about your amazing Valentine’s Day deals.
  • Welcome. Send fun emails to new customers to get them excited about upcoming events. Engage them in your unique Valentine’s Day promotion ideas.
  • Abandoned cart. Intrigue the customers who abandoned their carts with an enticing subject line and special holiday offers.

11. Create a contest or giveaway

Screenshot of a webpage displaying a Valentine’s Day giveaway.

Launching a contest or giveaway gets customers to interact with your brand. Encourage your audience to participate and post love stories, tag their romantic partners, or upload photos.

Contests boost business visibility and foster a sense of community around your brand. Pair your contest with exclusive Valentine’s Day sale discounts, a free gift, or early-bird specials for participants. Contests are a surefire way to captivate attention and drive Valentine’s Day sales.

Make it happen today!

12. Collaborate with other brands

Enhance your business through brand collaborations with the right partners. Use these collaborations to expand your customer reach and raise your brand’s credibility.

Take time to find a trustworthy eCommerce player with a shared customer base – you want to partner with a business that matches your personal and business values.

13. Don’t forget about self-love

Valentine’s marketing ideas aren’t just for couples anymore. For many, February 14th has become the perfect time for self-gifting. While some might not celebrate this holiday traditionally, they’ll still purchase gifts to mark the occasion.

Ideas for this group include blending messages that uplift singles and champion self-love. Consider crafting a distinct gift guide aimed at singles and inspire your customers to treat themselves.

14. Celebrate Galentine’s Day: Romance isn’t everything

A group of women celebrating Galentine’s Day.

February 13th, just one day before V-day, is Galentine’s Day – is a celebration of female camaraderie. Why not craft a special marketing campaign to honor it?

So, what makes the perfect Galentine’s gift? Celebrate the spirit of friendship with items like personalized wine tumblers, custom scented candles, themed t-shirts, handy accessory pouches, or branded tote bags.

15. Upselling and cross-selling

Valentine’s Day promotion ideas would be incomplete without upselling and cross-selling. In 2023, 53% of Americans celebrated February 14th, so there’s a great opportunity for serious sales.

Use Ultimate Special Offers to feature similar products of higher value (upsell) or relevant products that go together in a bundle, like Valentine’s Day and chocolate (cross-sell).

Capitalize on the occasion by promoting complementary items or introducing premium alternatives, for example:

  • Create a pillowcase and pair it with a cozy fleece blanket.
  • Combine a custom wireless charger with a personalized phone case.
  • Offer cheeky matching underwear sets or hoodies.

16. Promote anti-Valentine’s Day products

Not every customer is a V-day enthusiast, and love-letter-inspired Valentine’s Day product ideas won’t appeal to everyone. But there is a market for those who prefer a tongue-in-cheek approach to Valentine’s Day evening.

If it aligns with your brand, consider offering humorous anti-Valentine’s Day merchandise like shirts, custom wall art, or blankets. Embrace playful designs combined with cheeky quotes.

17. Reward loyal customers

One of the top Valentine’s Day sale ideas is to show appreciation to your loyal customers. Offer them personalized recommendations, exclusive discounted deals, or even special Valentine’s Day cards containing a promo code for future purchases.

Happy customers often become brand advocates, sharing their positive experiences with friends and family. This encourages word-of-mouth promotion and gets customers to return.

18. Indulge in paid advertising

Paid advertising is one of the easiest ways to expand your marketing influence. Valentine’s Day ad ideas can vary based on performance, but paid ads offer an assured reach to your target audience. Use platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Google for your marketing campaign.

Additionally, consider other platforms and channels that resonate with your audience. Amplify your brand’s presence and grow sales with a strategic love letter to a wider audience through paid advertising.

19. Sell your products at the right prices

Regarding Valentine’s Day treats, setting the right price for your products is key. Understand your market and tailor your prices to fit your target audience’s budget range.

Consider introducing a variety of items at different price points. For example, offer personalized mugs or custom t-shirts at more affordable rates – while premium canvas prints or customized jewelry can cater to higher-end buyers.

Creating combo deals, such as matching t-shirt sets or a mug and coaster deal, is a great Valentine’s Day marketing idea. This can add value and encourage larger purchases.

20. Host in-store or virtual Valentine’s events

Next on our list of Valentine’s Day marketing ideas includes providing an interactive experience.

For example:

  • In-store design sessions. Allow customers to create a Valentine’s Day treat – tees or hoodies for loved ones with professional guidance.
  • Virtual masterclasses. Host online classes for Valentine’s Day recipes, gift guides, crafting, or even relationship advice sessions with an expert.
  • Live product demos. Showcase your Valentine’s products in action, highlighting their value and giving customers gift inspiration.

What is Etsy SEO?

Etsy SEO is a set of techniques and processes for improving your store and product rankings on the Etsy platform and external search engines.

Etsy is a closed marketplace with specific parameters controlling an internal ranking system.

The platform also has an excellent PageRank on Google and search engines like Bing and Yahoo, which puts you in a position to intercept even more users from these search engines.

Note

Etsy SEO ranking factors

We’ll cover in detail several factors that influence your Etsy listing’s SEO rankings.

We’ve also compiled a short snippet of them:

  • Relevancy.
Query matching is Etsy’s top priority. How similar your Etsy listing’s tags, attributes, product descriptions, and titles are to people’s search queries, the higher your ranking will be.
  • Listing quality score.
If your product matches a customer’s search intent, and they stay on your product page for an extended period, this boosts your listing quality score.
  • However, if someone quickly clicks on and off your listing, it suggests your items match the terms but fail at search intent. This could mean they’re irrelevant to the Etsy shopper.
  • Recency.
Etsy gives a search boost to every new listing, and its algorithm measures how customers interact with them. After a few days, the platform will rank the product accordingly. The same applies to new shops.
  • Shipping price.
High shipping costs discourage purchases. Everyone loves free shipping, and Etsy reflects this by boosting listings that include it. Consider adding shipping costs to the price of your products to improve your ranking.
  • Personalized search.
Etsy tailors its search engine results to consumer interests, so your products may rank higher for some customers than others.
  • Language.
Always use your shop’s language in listings since Etsy automatically translates the title and labels into the prospective buyers’ language. If you’re fluent in multiple, Etsy recommends creating multilingual shops, as human translations are more accurate than automated ones.

15 Etsy SEO tips to get your shop noticed

Check these valuable SEO insights and the steps to make your Etsy shop ideas profitable.

Tip

Combine SEO with various Etsy marketing strategies and quality listings to get noticed quickly. Find out more on how to sell on Etsy.

1. Choose an Etsy shop name that includes keywords

Your shop’s name is crucial for Etsy SEO as it determines your store’s visibility. Ensure you’re familiar with the mandatory and recommended name parameters, and discover more SEO practices to help your shop stand out in search engines.

Mandatory requirements:

  • An Etsy shop name can have up to 20 characters.
  • Etsy doesn’t allow punctuation, symbols, unique characters, or words divided by spaces.
  • Shop names shouldn’t be trademarked by third parties. Google your name, and see if a domain is available on Namecheap before using it.

Recommended characteristics:

  • Good shop names are informative and clearly indicate what products the shop sells.
  • The best names are memorable and reflect the brand’s tone – this helps to captivate your niche and keeps the brand in customers’ minds.

SEO recommendations:

  • Insert a primary keyword in your shop name if possible – only if you can do it naturally.
  • Create an external site, like on Pattern or WordPress, and use the same shop name for your domain. Remember to trademark it.

Other tips for picking the perfect Etsy shop name:

  • Use a name generator like Namelix or Shopify’s Business Name Generator, or ask Chat GPT for suggestions.
  • Test your shop name for some time and check your Etsy performance with Etsy analytics and Google Search Console before fully committing to it.
  • Also, check within your social media channels to see if the name resonates with your audience. If so, trademark it and get a domain name.

2. Research and choose your keywords

Whether you compare Etsy vs eBay, Etsy vs Shopify, or any other platform and marketplace, keyword research is the foundation of SEO and will impact your visibility and sales.

Using relevant keywords in the right places determines if your products and store match search results. Incorporate them in tags, page titles, categories, and attributes to improve your Etsy SEO.

To ensure a keyword or phrase corresponds with potential customers’ search terms, try these techniques and platforms for your research.

How to find the best keywords for your Etsy shop

Etsy SEO: How to get noticed on Etsy in [bp_year] (with expert tips) 2
  • First, consider the features that make your product unique and make a list of them. Use both single words and short phrases.
  • Put yourself in the shopper’s shoes. If you were to purchase an item similar to what your shop offers, how would you find them? Which terms would you type in the Etsy search bar to find the perfect match? Make a list of these terms.
  • Research competitors. Look for best-selling products similar to yours or related to your niche. Take note of descriptions and hashtags. Check reviews and find what customers love about these products and why they’re best-sellers. Also, find what could be improved. Write down your findings.

Put these three lists together. Check if they overlap – give preference to the terms you found in competitors’ well-succeded shops that describe your own products well.

Now that you have a list of keywords, it’s time to test them on various platforms.

Where do you look for these keywords?

Etsy search, social media, and search engines will show if people are using these keywords and if pages and stores respond to the demand. But, it’s the keyword research tools that will narrow them down, helping you improve your Etsy SEO.

How to search for keywords on Etsy

Etsy’s search engine suggests keywords based on previous shoppers’ searches and current trends.

These suggestions determine what people are interested in buying within the platform, making the Etsy search engine a powerful tool.

Follow these steps to do keyword research inside Etsy:

  1. Find the Etsy platform search engine on www.etsy.com.

  1. In the search bar, type the main product of your Etsy store. For example, if you sell custom posters – write posters. When you finish typing the word, you’ll notice that the Etsy search engine offers a list of terms related to your search.

  1. Add for, and you’ll see another variety of keywords.

  1. Try adding with, and you’ll see even more options.

Where to insert keywords

These are the places where you must insert keywords to rank high – we’ll explain a few of them in detail later:

  • Product titles and descriptions.
  • Meta titles and descriptions and images alt text.
  • The domain name and blog posts (if you have an external site connected with Etsy via Pattern).
  • Feedback and reviews.

Observe and adapt: Check your Etsy analytics regularly to see which keywords and tags bring the most traffic and sales conversions. Alter anything that isn’t performing well. Try different keywords in product titles, descriptions, categories, and attributes.

3. Use keywords in product titles and descriptions

To improve your Etsy SEO, place the most relevant keywords at the beginning of the item title.

This will quickly let potential buyers know what the product is, resulting in more clicks and sales.

Tip

Learn more about strategies to make money on Etsy on our blog.

However, that doesn’t mean piling up a lot of keywords in the title – they must be readable. The search system on Etsy recognizes unnaturally incorporated keywords and can negatively impact your listing’s ranking.

Use phrases that shoppers would write in their search engines, trying to get as close as possible to an exact match.

Important

Writing titles packed with labels, like – Women’s T-Shirts, Cool T-Shirts, Black T-Shirts – won’t help you to increase your ranking in Etsy’s search results. They’re confusing and not specific enough, resulting in low conversion rates.

Etsy SEO: How to get noticed on Etsy in [bp_year] (with expert tips) 7

Aim for unique titles for each of your listings – that way, Etsy can distinguish your product from the competitor’s items.

Product titles must be concise yet informative – titles that are too long won’t display in full on Etsy’s search, Google, or other platforms. Remember, the maximum length for a title is 140 characters.

Etsy also advertises products with offsite ads, so you should also consider Google SEO and how your product titles and descriptions appear in external search engines. We’ll cover more on this later.

4. Use all 13 product tags in each listing

Etsy allows up to 13 tags, each with up to 20 characters – use them all. The more keywords you list, the more often your products appear in Etsy search results.

Target long-tail keywords and multi-word phrases rather than single words. These more complex keywords contain two or more search terms and are better at describing an attribute than simple keywords.

Etsy SEO: How to get noticed on Etsy in [bp_year] (with expert tips) 9

Example: Using a single tag, like vintage mom mug, is better than two or three separate tags like vintage and mom mug – you’re using a long-tail keyword and saving on tags.

Do not repeat tags or copy categories or attributes. It’s best to list more keywords in different sections of your listings to increase the chances of your products matching queries.

Example: Instead of using two tags, like mom gift and mama gift, go for Mother’s Day gift and present for mom. Also, Etsy already has categories, like kitchen and dining, so you shouldn’t use these as a tag.

You don’t need to translate tags – Etsy does this automatically. If your store is multilingual, fill in all fields in the selected languages.

Tip

Providing listings in different languages helps cater to international customers and improves your Etsy SEO in other locations.

Using regional phrases is recommended, especially if your shop targets a specific location. This includes using the most appropriate terminologies for items depending on the location of your potential customers.

Example: Tags like football gift and soccer present have similar meanings but target different English-speaking regions.

Don’t use plurals. Etsy matches queries and keywords through root words – plus, you’ll save on characters. Also, avoid using words with incorrect spelling, even if it’s a common way to refer to an item.

Pro tip

If you’re struggling with tag ideas for your product listings, find inspiration by checking competitors’ tags for similar products.

Do this by clicking Explore related searches under the product pictures or at the bottom of the webpage.

5. Select specific categories

Etsy has thorough categories and subcategories, including ones suitable for items from art and collectibles, woven baskets to chairs, and digital prints.

You cannot add your own categories since they’re predetermined. Still, their structure is ever-evolving, and you’ll probably never need to add another category to the list.

Etsy categories function like keywords and help the marketplace showcase and match products according to buyers’ searches and preferences.

Selecting the precise category for your listing creates more opportunities for your items to be exhibited in the results.

Tip

If your product doesn’t clearly match a category or subcategory, use a generic one, like accessories, and apply tags featuring its attributes.

Etsy SEO: How to get noticed on Etsy in [bp_year] (with expert tips) 11

6. Add relevant attributes

Etsy provides an extensive list of predetermined attributes to add to listings, making it easier for customers to find the exact item.

They also act as tags and keywords and help your products stand out in Etsy search engine results.

Attributes describe what a product is – not how it’s used. They vary according to the category – for instance, t-shirt and hoodie categories have attributes that include colors or sizes, whereas totes include material and style.

Relevant attributes for ranking include:

  • Size
  • Color
  • Product purpose
  • Material
  • Manufacturing information
  • Bulk or individual purchase
  • Optional customization
  • Unique features

7. Improve Etsy SEO with competitive shipping costs

High shipping costs discourage buyers and prevent them from completing a purchase.

Etsy has established shipping costs as a ranking factor and actively pushes stores – especially from the United States – to offer free shipping.

This strategy materializes from features like the free shipping guarantee for US buyers. See how to offer free delivery in the Etsy Help Center.

8. Renew your listings regularly

This will give your listings a mini boost in the rankings for a short time.

Constantly renewing your listing isn’t a viable Etsy SEO strategy, but doing so during busy periods may help increase your brand visibility. Renew your listings during high-traffic hours. Use tools like Google Trends or social media polls to discover when your potential buyers are most likely to shop. Then, publish your listings accordingly.

Start your Etsy print on demand business today!

9. Use high-quality photos: Place the best images first

Each listing has room for ten photos and one video. Place the best photo first to gain positive Etsy SEO results since it’s the first one buyers will see.

90% of Etsy shoppers say picture quality is important when purchasing a product.

So, it’s no surprise that Etsy’s algorithm gives preference in the results to stores with high-quality banners and product pictures.

Important

Use photos that clearly represent what you’re selling. This increases the likelihood of having more clicks, favorites, and sales.

As well as adding images, improve your listing quality by adding a video of up to 100MB.

Videos are more accurate than still images. Show your customers you care about honesty and transparency by adding a short, high-quality video showcasing the unpacking or the item’s features.

Also, look critically at other Etsy sellers with similar products to yours who utilize videos – observe what works well and what doesn’t and gain inspiration.

Etsy SEO: How to get noticed on Etsy in [bp_year] (with expert tips) 12

Explore these quick tips to produce high-quality photos that reinforce your brand, increase its visibility on Etsy, and capture the attention of more customers:

  • Keep your brand identity on every picture, video, and product design, from color palettes to typography, illumination, tone, and mood.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest color trends.
  • Make the most of our ever-expanding Printify Product Creator (formerly known as Mockup Generator) to give your customers a clear image of what you’re selling.
  • Creating your own product mockups with Placeit or other alternatives can help your product stand out compared to other Etsy listings.
  • Order product samples and take your own pictures.

10. Complete the Etsy shop about section

Completing the About section of your store can help increase your customer and market experience score and improve your SEO for Etsy and your listings’ ranking in the search results.

By sharing their story in the About section, Etsy shop owners can create a special connection with customers and build trust.

Make it happen today!

11. Add clear policies to your store

Having Etsy shop policies is optional, but they impact your ranking. Etsy increases the customer and market experience score of shops with complete policies.

In turn, this score affects the listings’ rankings on Etsy search engines.

Additionally, there are other benefits for defining your policies:

  • Clear policies ensure sellers and buyers are on the same page regarding potential issues like returns, refunds, or cancellations.
  • Shops with clear policies display credibility and professionalism while increasing customer trust.
  • Europe-based sellers or shops selling to customers in the EU must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which requires a privacy policy. However, countries worldwide also pose similar legal requirements.

Good news

Etsy significantly improved its process of defining policies. Most steps are automated and only require checking some boxes. See our blog and learn how to make the best Etsy shop policies.

12. Promote your shop page to get inbound links

Try these additional strategies to improve your shop’s SEO and get a better placement in search results:

Guest blogging is an excellent way to get more exposure. Connect with bloggers and write a guest post on other sites – this will help you build a network, publicize products, and create links to your store, which is excellent for SEO. In addition to increasing your visibility, guest blogging helps you develop authority and be perceived as an expert in your field.

Create social media accounts to develop a loyal base and drive traffic to your Etsy shop. There are infinite possibilities – create a brand Instagram account, show people behind the scenes of your business on TikTok, or create interest and discussion groups on Facebook.

Tip

Remember that increasing traffic from external sources, such as social media channels, will help improve your Etsy shop’s SEO and boost the brand’s visibility on search engine results.

Pinterest is more than a social media platform – it’s an image search engine where people seek ideas for projects, crafts, DIYs, or purchases. Promote your products and link a new listing or even invest in a Pinterest affiliate marketing strategy. Similarly to your Etsy store, you need to optimize your account using Pinterest SEO.

Add pins relating to your product and include the same primary keyword from your Etsy listings and tags section to get your content seen by Pinterest users. Viewers who enjoy your content are more likely to click on your pin and purchase your products.

13. Experiment and adjust your strategy

Test new strategies regularly and review your statistics. As Etsy’s search algorithm changes, you must be familiar with its developments and how that affects your listings’ performance.

You have two Etsy native tools for these purposes:

  • Etsy search analytics – available in the Marketing section of the Shop Manager, the tool gives insights into keywords, traffic, and conversions. Use it also to track these KPIs over a specific period.
  • The Etsy Stats, also known as Store Statistics, are placed in the Shop Manager main menu. The tool displays traffic sources, conversions, and ads performance. It lets you identify what’s working well in your store and what you should change.

14. Make your customers come back

Etsy SEO: How to get noticed on Etsy in [bp_year] (with expert tips) 13

Not only is it good for your business and brand image, but the Etsy algorithm also loves stores with recurring customers.

Explore these ideas for creating a loyal customer base:

  • Answer customer messages promptly and professionally.
  • Use social media to build relationships by participating in groups, creating polls, and publishing regularly.
  • Send discount coupons for future purchases and to attract potential buyers.
  • Email special offers to customers.
  • Add small presents like badges or custom stickers to orders.
  • Prepare personalized thank you cards.
  • Keep strict business ethics. That includes avoiding copyright infringement and not using photos deceptively to represent measures or results you do not really have.
  • Have clear policies.

Remember: Do not promise more than you sell, or you will be tied to negative feedback, which could tarnish your brand.

You can add a shop announcement and alert buyers of store events, such as a sale, new products, a cross-promotion, or if you’re going in vacation mode.

  1. Open the Shop Manager.
  2. Scroll down the left-hand menu and click on the pencil icon below Sales Channels, alongside your shop name.
  3. Scroll down below your listings to the Announcement section.
  4. Click on Add a shop announcement, below your shop banner, and just above your listings.
  5. Add or edit an announcement and hit Save.

Note

Etsy recommends keeping announcements short and sweet.

Be a part of the Promoted listings by using Etsy advertising to get a higher spot on Etsy search results. You can pay per click to improve a listing’s visibility, displaying the term ad to indicate that it is a paid campaign. This will cater to selected target demographics and search tags.

Aside from marketing on Etsy, try other strategies, like social media promotion and word-of-mouth advertising – those will help you create even more pathways to your shop.

Note

Advertise your store using Etsy offsite ads on Bing or Google search results.

FAQ

Social media promotions can significantly impact Etsy SEO by driving external traffic to your listings, which Etsy’s algorithm may favor. Sellers can use platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook to showcase their products, engage with potential customers, and create content that links back to their Etsy shop.

New sellers can improve their Etsy SEO by optimizing their listings with relevant keywords, ensuring high-quality images are used, actively engaging with the Etsy community through forums, and responding promptly to customer inquiries. Offering competitive pricing and ensuring your products are unique can also help attract initial traffic and sales.

For tracking Etsy SEO performance, tools like eRank, Marmalead, and the Etsy Shop Stats feature are valuable. These tools provide insights into keyword rankings, shop visibility, and other essential metrics that can help sellers make informed decisions to optimize their SEO strategies over time.

Improve your shop with search engine optimization

Wooden cubes spelling out the term “SEO.”

Search engine optimization (SEO) makes your digital space more attractive to customers – increasing your user traffic from Etsy search results and external search engines.

Even though Etsy is a closed marketplace with its own rules, improving SEO and increasing your shop’s visibility is still possible. Start with these proven strategies and tools:

Keywords

Keywords are the search terms most used when looking for something online. Search engine optimization starts with keyword research – this step is essential for boosting Etsy sales.

Look for keywords related to your niche, brand, and products, revealing your audience’s interests and needs. Then, find the phrases and words that best align with their purchasing decisions and aren’t too oversaturated by competitors in your niche.

How? Use free or paid tools to research and monitor trending keywords related to your brand or unique selling propositions (USPs). Here are some of the best tools for keyword insights:

General SEO tools for free

A free tool that enables Etsy sellers to track and analyze their shop’s traffic sources, visitor behavior, and overall performance to help optimize their marketing and sales.

SEO tools integrated with Etsy

Price: Free basic option and plans from $5.99 to $29.99 per month.

Quick tip

Check out our Etsy keyword tool article for more options and dive into our detailed guide on Etsy SEO to enhance your research efforts.

Applying the right keywords

Integrate keywords in your shop detail pages like the About section and all the information in your Etsy product listings – listing titles, persuasive product descriptions, and helpful tags.

Take the time to write your Etsy store description using long-tail keywords – full phrases that answer a specific query or provide detailed information – that establish your USPs.

Titles should be short and informative, descriptions need to highlight essential product features, and tags should integrate relevant keywords.

Practice a healthy balance when placing keywords in your content and new listings:

  • Do add and write around keywords wherever possible.
  • Don’t overstuff and make the descriptions unreadable.

Start a blog to increase traffic

Blog articles are one of the most effective ways to generate organic traffic and bring your website to the first page of search results.

Etsy doesn’t support a blog, but the platform integrates with Pattern, which allows sellers to build more robust homepages and a blog for additional content. The subscription costs $15 per month, including some additional fees for a domain and Etsy Payments.

If you’re looking for other options with different capabilities, it’s also possible to create your own blog on WordPress – or multiple platforms like it – and promote your Etsy shop externally.

Consider the following tips for creating blog content to promote your Etsy shop:

  • Apply your keyword research results to plan a blog post about a subject that receives large organic traffic relevant to your business and has popular demand.
  • Create and update content regularly to maintain your website’s relevance for the search engine algorithm and to keep your content up-to-date.
  • Implement user-generated content to share their stories, insights, and reviews to generate community solidarity, with proper credit, of course.
  • Use the blog to answer questions and issues your potential buyers may have to provide value beyond your products and foster brand loyalty.
  • Inform the reader about your products, but don’t oversell. Stay transparent and prioritize informative and engaging content over simple Etsy advertising.

With time, a consistent blog with relevant keywords and an engaging style will make your brand an authority figure, improve your SEO, and drive organic traffic to your Etsy shop for more sales.

Create enticing product images

A well-lit professional photo studio set.

Eye-catching product photos are a decisive factor for 90% of Etsy shoppers when considering a purchase. Since customers can’t touch and feel your Etsy products, your photos should be good enough to replace that experience and convince the shopper your product is worth buying.

Create listings with high-quality product photos.

Etsy allows you to display ten pictures per product. Make sure to use all available slots whenever possible, starting with your best full-body photos and ending with small details.

You can take the photos yourself with a couple of sample products at home, hire a professional photographer, or use generated photos if you’re working with a mockup interface.

Be mindful of sizes, resolution, and formatting. Etsy has specific info for optimizing product photos. Non-optimized images can negatively interfere with Etsy scores and your Etsy SEO.

Check the Etsy guidelines for formatting pictures.

Explore tips for taking great product photos for Etsy.

Add product videos for dynamic browsing.

Implementing videos of your products can significantly enhance your listings and brand image. Videos allow potential customers to see your items in action, offering a clearer understanding of size, functionality, and quality, which can be pivotal in the buyer’s decision-making process.

Your shop can enable a short 5 to 15-second Etsy listing video to complement your product photos with a 360-degree view or to demonstrate your product in use. This can help you bridge the gap between online shopping and the tactile experience of in-store retail even further.

Learn how to add a listing video from the Etsy Help Page.

Apply for Etsy Ads

The Etsy website opened in a browser window.

Etsy offers two paid advertising options: on-site and off-site advertising.

On-site Ads

These are known simply as Etsy Ads or promoted listings and are paid advertising running only inside the eCommerce marketplace. Etsy Ads places promoted listings visibly within Etsy Search Results, Category Pages, and Market Pages in promoted sections.

To set up an advertising campaign with Etsy Ads, go to the Etsy Shop Manager, then:

  • Click Marketing and Etsy Ads.
  • Add a daily budget (the minimum is $1.00, but you can adjust it anytime).
  • Click Start advertising.

Two main factors influence the promoted listing – the amount bid and the listing quality:

Setting a high daily budget affects the listing visibility, but non-optimized items will perform poorer even with lots of money spent on internal advertisement.

To use Etsy Ads’ full potential, improve the listing quality by refining your SEO. Etsy attributes a quality score to the listing according to the titles, tags, and shop history.

Off-site Ads

These promote listings that rank well outside the marketplace on platforms like Bing, Google, and social media. Off-site ads are automatically enabled for all Etsy shops.

To decide whether a listing is advertised off-site, Etsy uses a Listing Quality Score, which factors a combination of data, including clicks, views, favorites, and purchases, to see how likely a promoted listing will convert to a purchase. The higher the score, the more it’s advertised.

You’re charged for an off-site ad only if you have successful conversions from the said ad. The fee is 15% for shops with less than $10,000 in annual sales and 12% for those above.

Cookies track advertised listings for 30 days and charge the fee if a customer returns to make one or more purchases in that duration.

If you sell goods with low profit margins or if your listings experience heavy off-site advertising, the fees may add up and become financially unviable. You may want to consider opting out:

Shops below the $10,000 target can opt out of the program in the Shop Manager Settings section. Click Off-Site Ads and then Stop Promoting My Products.

Utilize social media

A set of social media icons – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

Social media is everywhere. Use it to promote your Etsy store among social media followers and increase sales – you can manage most social media engagement features for free.

Create social accounts for your store beforehand to make sure they’re available across all platforms. You can integrate Etsy with Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and X (FKA Twitter).

Social media options can be found in the Etsy Marketing section under the Social Media menu. The page offers a straightforward creative process for developing social posts. Access the menu Social Accounts in the upper right-hand corner to connect your social networks.

You can advertise on a social media platform in two ways:

  1. Share listings from the Listings Section
  • Go to the Listings section and choose a product.
  • Click the gear icon under a product you want to share.
  • Click on Share, and choose between Facebook, Pinterest, or X.
  1. Share listings from the Marketing Section
  • In the Marketing section, click on Social Media.
  • Choose Create Post in the upper right-hand corner.
  • Follow the step-by-step instructions – Etsy will suggest recent listings or create something new.
A group of people doing brand and trend research.

Part of market research is finding reliable examples of trends and current eCommerce strategies that you can include in your own shop, which helps reflect possibilities of what is and isn’t achievable.

When doing market research, look for competitors and the best-selling items on Etsy. Evaluate how their products compare to yours and how to distinguish Etsy listings with your own USPs.

Use the Etsy search function to find the most popular Etsy sellers with similar items. Type a keyword related to your product. Analyze multiple stores, from interface and listings to reviews, and see what customers like and dislike.

You can also compare sellers and functions on other platforms. Check Etsy vs eBay or Shopify vs Etsy to get inspiration for marketing strategies to implement in your Etsy store.

Create your Etsy shop policy

Policies help protect sellers and buyers, ensuring everyone is on the same page. Even small shops, new sellers, or hobbyists without a business license can benefit from defining clear policies.

Quick tip

Do you need a business license to sell on Etsy? Check out our article and find out what applies in which cases.

Fortunately, you don’t have to set up your shop policies manually and in full detail. Etsy has made that task easier with sample templates, automating and standardizing most parts of it.

There is more than one way to define your policies:

  • In the Shop Manager, click on Settings, then Policy Settings.
  • In the Shop Manager, click the pencil icon close to Sales Channels, then scroll down to Shop Policies.

After that, click Create Policy or edit an existing one. You’ll be offered different policy options:

  • Returns & exchanges – Create various return and exchange policies on a per-listing basis for non-digital items. For most regions, these must be set for every new listing.
  • Cancellations – This is a shop-wide policy that shows buyers whether or not you accept order cancellations.
  • Privacy policy – Define how your shop plans to protect the buyers’ data. You can use Etsy’s guide and templates to cover all grounds and regional requirements.
  • Fixed policies – Etsy provides pre-set policies that sellers can’t edit: estimated delivery times, customs and import taxes, and instant downloads.

You can edit policies at any time and see the last timestamp when they were changed or updated. Buyers receive a copy of the relevant policies in their purchase email receipt.

Explore third-party apps for Etsy

Several apps and integrations can help boost your Etsy business functionality, expand your reach, and schedule or automate repetitive tasks to streamline your management.

Some are in the Integrations section, located in the Shop Manager. There are also plenty of external third-party apps that connect to Etsy or can be used similarly.

Use competitive pricing

A person calculating the pricing for their Etsy listings.

There are many pricing strategies to calculate your product costs. Consider one of these two pricing strategies to apply to your Etsy store:

  • Price your products lower than the competition to gain an advantage of affordability.
  • Increase your prices slightly compared to the competition to increase the perceived value of your merch.

In both cases, you’ll need to factor in other Etsy sellers in addition to your costs per order, business overheads, and your target audience.

Make relevant listings for your demographic. For example, if your potential customers are students, consider lowering your prices to expand your reach. However, better-quality products set at a higher price may speak louder for financially stable individuals or families.

Choose a pricing method that keeps your profit margin stable and acceptable and offer multiple payment options to ensure the buying experience is consistent.

Offer free shipping

Etsy actively encourages sellers to offer free shipping as a dynamic strategy to boost Etsy sales. This is a form of psychological pricing – a potential customer is often attracted to a product priced higher with free shipping than the same merchandise sold cheaper with a shipping fee.

There are multiple ways to enable free shipping. Etsy offers free shipping guarantees that automatically apply to orders for US buyer purchases that exceed $35. You can also disable shipping fees with shipping profiles that can be added or edited for select items and countries.

You can set up shipping profiles for your Etsy shop, including offering free shipping guarantees, in the Settings menu, under Shipping settings.

Quick tip

If you’re a US seller and want to enable free shipping, Etsy offers the Smart Pricing Tool, which automatically adjusts prices in bulk to recover the cost of free shipping.

Products with low shipping rates are ranked higher by the Etsy algorithm. In other words – a free shipping policy will improve your Etsy SEO and attract more potential buyers.

Set up coupon codes and sales

An illustration of three shopping bags.

There are many ways to create a special deal that sells: seasonal or event sales, offering a coupon code for repeat customers, or simply setting a product at a discounted price.

These are all ways how to get sales on Etsy at an increased volume and can account for:

  • Holidays or events
  • New product launches
  • Before re-adjusting prices
  • Clearing inventory
  • Market price testing

To set up special deals – Etsy sales, discount codes, or targeted offers – go to the Shop Manager. Choose Marketing, and then click Sales and Discounts. This section also allows sellers to enable automatic discounts for abandoned carts or favorited items.

Leverage Etsy customer reviews

User reviews impact Etsy SEO, for good or bad, since it’s one of the factors that affects an Etsy shop’s Customer & Experience Score. Bad user reviews will interfere with your position on Etsy search rankings. Follow our best practices when interacting with your customer reviews:

  • Thank new customers for positive reviews and respond professionally to negative ones.
  • Feature top reviews on your shop page, especially those featuring your USPs.
  • Always answer user reviews, attend to any issues raised, and consistently follow up.
  • Remind customers to leave reviews in your marketing content to previous buyers.
  • Prioritize personalized reviews and limit the use of generative bots or automated tools.

Like pictures, reviews are a significant part of a customer’s contact with the product in an Etsy shop. 75% of consumers read reviews regularly or always. Prompt and frequent responses to customer reviews drive high ratings and better sales acquisition.

Create an email marketing strategy

Email campaigns are a highly effective and low-cost way to drive relevant traffic back to your store and increase Etsy sales. Here are some of the benefits of email marketing:

  • Full Channel Ownership – Etsy doesn’t collect or manage your email list; you can communicate with subscribers independently of any platform changes.
  • Direct Communication – Develop relationships with customers directly to keep your business relevant.
  • Order Management – Send information to keep the customer informed about their purchase, order, and delivery, as well as offer customer support lines.
  • Marketing and Promotion – Promote your products and campaigns and offer unique deals to customers interested in your Etsy shop.
  • Improved Data Gathering – Track customer preferences and interests based on engagement (clicks and opens), segment target audiences, and request feedback.

First, you’ll need to create a mailing list:

  • Acquire emails and subscribers through multiple channels, including social media platforms, external websites and blogs, and even live events.
  • Ask for consent to add email addresses to your list, and ask if your customer wants to receive messages. Adding emails without permission violates Etsy policies.
  • Offer benefits in exchange for email addresses/subscriptions to your list – tutorials, eBooks, coupon codes, free shipping, and more.
  • Make it easy to subscribe. Use call-to-action buttons in Facebook shops and add widgets if you have a website.

Once you have subscribers, you can utilize email marketing for lifecycle and promotional emails to inform the reader about updates in your store and products. The marketplace already sends transactional emails about orders and shipping to its Etsy buyers automatically on your behalf.

Apps for email marketing

Not integrated with Etsy but can be used with content marketing, such as blogs or your own business website. If you have less than 500 contacts, Mailchimp allows you to send them 1,000 emails a month for free.

Pricing: The free plan offers several features, including free website building in a Mailchimp subdomain, campaigns, automation, and analytics. Plans range from $13 to $350 per month.

Mad Mimi is an email marketing tool that integrates with Etsy, helping merchants guide their design with a gallery of templates and an easy user interface.

Pricing: Their plans are customizable based on your required contact numbers, ranging from $10 to $1,049 per month.

Increase sales on Etsy by offering customized products

man learning how to boost sales on Etsy by interacting with his customers.

Prioritize customer support and communication

Loyal customers are essential, as most revenue comes from repeat purchases. Here are some tips to improve your communication with your online customers:

  • Always be polite and respectful, regardless of how the customer behaves.
  • Communicate clearly and be concise. Always get to the point.
  • Set up saved replies for the most common questions. Go to the Shop Manager, Messages, and click Saved replies below the message text box.
  • Be responsive. If you can’t answer quickly, set up auto-replies acknowledging that you received their messages, and you’ll get back to the customer as soon as possible. That can be done in the Messages section of the Shopping Manager, in the Auto-reply menu in the right-hand upper corner.
  • Don’t promise what you can’t deliver. Always be honest, even if it’s not the answer the customer would like to receive.
  • Add a “Thank you” message to buyers on the receipt pages and in emails received after purchase. This can be done in Shopping Manager, Settings, Info & Appearance. Then scroll down to Message to Buyers.

Offer more products

When setting up your Etsy shop, finding the right balance in the number of products and variants you offer is key to learning how to make sales on Etsy in the long term.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, we can point to optimal ranges for a good strategy.

Maintain an optimal number of products.

Start with 20-30 items: Enough variety without overwhelming options. This range also helps Etsy’s algorithm better understand and categorize your shop, improving your visibility.

Expand as you grow: As your shop gains traction, aim to gradually increase your inventory. A target of 50 to 100 items is a good goal for established shops. This provides a comprehensive selection that caters to different tastes and increases the chances of cross-selling.

Follow these best practices for product variants.

Limit variants to key options: Offer a few meaningful variants likely to appeal to your audience, such as size, color, or material. Typically, 35 variants per product is more than enough.

Use variants wisely: Make it easier for customers to find what they’re looking for without causing decision fatigue. Ensure that each variant is distinct and adds real value.

Include small gifts or gift messages with your orders

Also known as packaging inserts, packaged gift messages, or small gifts are a prime way to increase repeat purchases and entice buyers to recommend your shop to more people.

Advantages of custom branding inserts include:

  • Brand differentiation – adding a personal touch distinguishes your brand from the competition and makes customers feel valued.
  • Word-of-mouth marketing – leaving a physical reminder lets people remember to share their positive experiences with others.
  • Unboxing experience – unboxing is a customer’s first impression of your product, so it helps to make it noteworthy.
  • Positive reviews – customers who receive an unexpected gift are likelier to leave a positive review.

If you want to prioritize gift inserts with Printify, we have multiple Print Providers that support fulfillment with gift messages for all Etsy orders. When working with Printify, navigate to your Printify Store Settings and click the Gift Messages tab to edit and attach gift templates.

Be active in the community

Finally, actively engage with your target audience across their preferred media – places like niche forums or robust social media platforms like Reddit. Establish authority, gain insights, and build a community around your brand with genuine interactions and consistent engagement.

In the dynamic world of Print-on-Demand (POD), staying ahead of the curve with innovative and creative strategies, including digital marketing, is key to captivating your audience and boosting your sales.

In this article, we explore how to write ChatGPT prompts to streamline your workflow, from social media marketing to email campaigns and more.

What are ChatGPT prompts?

A screenshot of the ChatGPT chat window.

Let’s start with the basics: understanding ChatGPT prompts. ChatGPT prompts are instructions or questions directed towards ChatGPT to generate specific responses or content.

These prompts can range from simple questions like asking for the weather forecast to more complex tasks such as writing an essay, coding a software program, or creating a business plan.

Did you know?

AI processes instructions through natural language processing, a technology that allows computers to “understand” human languages.

ChatGPT mainly responds to queries using information from its databases. Although version 4.0 can access the internet via Bing, its ability to generate accurate responses with information from the internet is limited.

Creating ChatGPT prompts can generate ideas across various domains, from content creation and blog post ideas to customer service, social media captions, and even coding

For POD businesses, ChatGPT can assist in creating engaging content, answering FAQs, and generating marketing material.

Note

The best prompts aren’t just questions but can also be statements or scenarios that set a context for ChatGPT to respond to. They are a powerful tool for leveraging AI’s capabilities, allowing users to access a wide range of information, generate creative content, solve problems, and even learn new topics through the machine learning model

For instance, you can “train” AI with a customer service script, asking common questions and giving feedback to ChatGPT. You may even discover solutions you had never considered before.

ChatGPT prompts act as a bridge between your creative ideas and their execution. Its ability to understand and generate text based on these prompts means you can automate parts of your content strategy, from brainstorming ideas to creating ready-to-publish content.

How to write prompts for ChatGPT?

To get the best responses, make sure your prompts are clear and specific. ChatGPT uses machine learning, which means the more precisely you ask and give feedback, the better the engine’s answers will be.

Specificity can vary, from choosing the tone of voice (professional, casual, humorous) to including different call-to-actions.

Begin by defining your objective, then structure your ChatGPT prompt to include all necessary details. Key points include:

  • Be concise yet detailed.
  • Specify the format or structure if relevant.
  • Indicate the tone or style desired.
  • Provide context for clarity.

When writing prompts for ChatGPT, consider adopting a step-by-step approach:

  • Start with a broad prompt to generate initial ideas or content pieces. Then, refine these outputs with more detailed prompts.
  • For example, after generating a blog title, follow up with a prompt for an outline, then another for an introductory paragraph, and so on.

This method allows for precision in content creation, ensuring the final output closely aligns with your vision.

Tip

Use Custom GPTs (specialized models fine-tuned for specific tasks or domains) to write customized prompts for specific problem-solving skills.
