Create what’s trending. Sell what’s hot

Instagram Reels dominate short-form video platforms, getting nearly double the engagement of other post types.

This guide explains how to make a Reel on Instagram that will take your video content marketing to the next level. We’ll cover Instagram’s creative resources, business tips, and strategies to help you create engaging content aligned with the platform’s algorithm.

Key takeaways

  • Instagram’s creative tools, like audio, AR (augmented reality) effects, and timers, make Reels more engaging and interactive.
  • The ideal Instagram Reel size is 1080 x 1920 pixels. Reels can be anywhere from 7-90 seconds long.
  • Using trending music and sound effects that match your Reel’s topic increases engagement.
  • Peak times to post Instagram Reels are 8am to 12pm and 4pm to 5pm PST on weekdays and until 8pm on weekends.
  • Experiment with new editing techniques, stay authentic and respond quickly to trends for maximum impact.

How to make a Reel on Instagram

The quick, bite-sized nature of Instagram Reels has made them a highly engaging form of online content. If you’re looking to up your digital marketing game, you’re in the right spot – we’re about to teach you how to make a fantastic Reel on Instagram in six easy steps.

1. Open your Reels page

First, make sure you’ve got a smartphone and have given Instagram access to your camera, microphone, and device storage. Then, go to the Instagram home screen and tap the plus icon at the bottom of the page to start a new Reel.

Now, swipe to the Reels tab from the bottom menu. You’ll now have two options: choose a video from your camera roll or record a new one.

To record a new video, tap the camera icon in the top-left corner.

You’ll see lots of tools on the screen.

  • Left toolbar – Audio library, effects, layouts, and other creative resources.
  • Top right corner – Control settings.
  • Top middle – Flashbulb settings, timer, and video speed.
  • Capture button – Record, choose resolution, a selection of special effects.
  • Bottom left corner – Media gallery.

2. Select audio

Tap the music note icon in the toolbar to go to Instagram’s music library.

It has several sections:

  • For you: Music based on your interactions and profile preferences.
  • Featured: Popular songs.
  • New releases: Fresh, upcoming tracks.
  • Original audio: Sounds created by others who create Reels.

Add audio first and build your content around it to make sure your Reel’s topic matches up with your chosen music.

While exploring Reels from other creators or brands to discover trending sounds, select Use Audio from public Reels to save it to your library for future use.

Add your own audio by creating original content, recording spoken lines, mixing tracks, or compiling edited clips. Your original audio will be available for others to use unless you limit your Reel to close friends or followers.

Reminder

Licensed music from Instagram’s music library is usually cleared for use, but be mindful of copyright when uploading third-party or unlicensed audio.

3. Record video clips

Film and pause your Reels at appropriate cuts, all in a single take, or add clips of a pre-recorded video from your camera roll.

There’s also a timer feature for hands-free recording.

Find the timer tool on the left of your screen – the clock icon – to set your Instagram Reel length and timer countdown. Once you press record, the Reel will start countdown timers (three or ten seconds) before you start recording.

While recording, you’ll see a progress indicator at the top of the screen. Release your hold to stop recording at the end of your video clip, or let it finish on its own if you’re using a timer. Then, press the record button to keep filming or select a new timer to record multiple clips.

Tap Next when you’re done recording. Don’t worry – you can always edit later.

4. Add elements

How to make an Instagram Reel that pops? By adding some fun stuff. Tap on the sticky note icon at the top of the screen to choose stickers, turn on captions, add a location, and more. Tap the Aa icon to add text to the video. Make sure anything you add to your Reel is placed strategically and stays the same size throughout the video so your content is easier to follow.

Navigate to editing mode and select a clip to create seamless transitions between scenes. This makes your Reel more engaging for viewers.

Quick tip

Pay attention to spelling. Great content is often overshadowed by cringy grammar.

5. Change speed

In editing mode, tap on the clip you want to change. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see a timer icon. Select it and choose between 0.1x to 10x speed.

Slowing the action at the right moment and ramping up to a faster pace can make a regular scene more dramatic and eye-catching for Instagram users.

6. Post your Reel

Once you’ve chosen the right audio, added effects, and set speeds, tap Next. The Instagram app will ask you to add captions. Make it short, place any necessary links for ads, describe the content, and add relevant hashtags.

Then, tag any people seen in the Reel, add a location tag if necessary, set a cover image, and choose where to share your content. Enable auto-generated captions on the Advanced Settings page, which we recommend if you haven’t included your own.

Once finished editing, save the draft and post it in the future, or click Next to share your Instagram Reel immediately.

Make it your way!

Instagram Reel size and length

For a professional-looking Instagram account, pay attention to Reel dimensions and video length. Start by ensuring your grid image is 110 x 110 pixels and centered so it looks good on a mobile device.

When creating IG Reels, aim for vertical videos with a full-screen aspect ratio of 9:16 (1080 x 1920 pixels). Avoid placing key details in the bottom fifth of the screen so they don’t get hidden by captions.

As for length, Instagram Reels can now be up to 90 seconds long. Here’s a breakdown of optimal lengths for different purposes.

  • 7-15 seconds: Great for looping, these short-form videos drive higher engagement by increasing views and favorability in the algorithm.
  • 15-30 seconds: Ideal for product showcases, seasonal campaigns, ads, or addressing current social trends.
  • 30-90 seconds: Best suited for informative content like tutorials, testimonials, or collaborations with other creators.

Tailor your Reel size and duration to match your marketing objectives and engage your audience effectively.

Best times to post reels on Instagram

Here are the best times for posting Instagram Reels based on user engagement trends throughout the week. Use this table to maximize your reach and visibility by posting during peak activity hours on weekdays and weekends.

DayBest time to post a Reel (PST)Engagement trend
Weekdays8 a.m. to 12 p.m., 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.High daytime engagement
Weekends8 a.m. to 12 p.m., 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.Extended evening engagement

Your Instagram account should aim for daily video uploads. However, the algorithm can label too many posts in a single day as spam, stunting your progress and limiting your audience.

Instagram provides data-tracking analytics tools to put your engagement metrics into numbers. However, we recommend looking into third-party data tracking sites to see if they’ll be more useful.

How to repost a Reel on Instagram

If you’d like to repost someone else’s Reel to your page, there are a few ways to do it.

Repost to your Instagram Story

Sharing a Reel directly to your Story is possible through the app itself but will only show the first 15 seconds of the video before linking the Instagram user to the full cut on the original Reel page.

Tap the paper plane icon on the right side of the Reel, then select the Add to Story bubble at the bottom of the screen. However, Stories only last for 24 hours unless you add them to a Highlight on your page.

Download your video

If you’d like to upload a Reel to your own page or save it to your camera roll, tap the paper plane icon on the right of the Reel. Then, scroll through the bubbles at the bottom of the screen to find the Download button. Tap it to download the Reel to your device. Then, follow the usual steps to upload the video as a Reel to your own page.

As a rule of thumb, always credit the original creator when uploading someone else’s video as a Reel to your profile.

Remix or create a sequence

There are two options for posting an Instagram Reel to your feed without downloading it: remixing and creating a sequence. To view these options, tap the three dots on the right side of the Reel. A popup will appear with options to Remix or Sequence the Reel.

If you choose Remix, you’ll have some options to edit the Reel before posting it to your own Instagram profile.

The options are similar to the ones you’ll see when creating a Reel from scratch – adding filters, audio, captions, text, stickers, voiceovers, and more. When remixing a Reel, you must change something about the video before posting it to your feed. Once you’ve made adjustments, tap Next and proceed to the final stage before posting.

Making a Sequence lets you make all the same edits as Remixes, plus add your own clips to the original Reel. This is popular for reaction posts, answering questions posed in original Reels, or following up on a previous video. Trim the Reel to your desired length, then add your clips. Once done, follow the steps mentioned above to finish and post your Reel.

How to promote Reels on Instagram

“Boosting” Reels is a fantastic way to expand your reach on Instagram. Your boosted Reels will appear across the platform, including the main feed, Stories, Reels tab, and Instagram’s Explore page, giving you plenty of visibility.

Here are a few things to know before boosting your Reel:

  • You need a business account to boost Reels. If you’re using a personal account, don’t worry – it’s easy to switch.
  • Interactive stickers, copyrighted music, GIFs, or third-party filters aren’t allowed on boosted Reels.
  • You need a public account. Otherwise, users who don’t follow you won’t be able to see your Instagram Reel.
  • You cannot boost Reels that you’ve shared on Facebook.
  • The Reel should be under 60 seconds and in a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio.

Step 1: Head to your Instagram profile

The first step is locating the Reel you want to boost. Visit your profile and find the Reel – either in your main feed or under the Reels tab.

Step 2: Pick the Reel you want to boost

Tap on the Reel you’ve decided to promote. If you’re viewing the Reel from your Reels tab, tap the three dots icon in the bottom right corner and choose “Boost Reel.” In the main feed, you should see the “Boost” button below the Reel.

Step 3: Choose your goal and define your audience

Instagram will ask you to define your goal. Do you want more profile visits, website clicks, or direct messages? Select the option that aligns with your marketing objectives.

Choose who you want to target with your boosted Reel. You can either let Instagram handle it with automatic targeting or set up your own custom audience based on age, location, and interests.

Step 4: Set your budget and duration

Decide how much you’re willing to spend and for how long. Whether you want to run the promotion for a day or a month is entirely up to you and your budget.

Step 5: Confirm and boost

Review all your selections, and when you’re ready, tap Boost. Instagram will review your ad, and once approved, your Reel will be on its way to reaching a wider audience.

Why use Instagram Reels for business?

Since its launch in 2020, Instagram Reels has increased video engagement by 22%, with 53% of global marketers using short videos as a key part of their advertising strategy.

Reels are an excellent way to spread a message, connect with different niches, and align with modern desires for authenticity and relatability.

Instagram Reel tips and tricks

Need a few Instagram Reel tips to get the creativity flowing?

These insights will help you create Reels like a pro to increase traffic and captivate a wider audience.

Niche down

Successful Instagram marketing starts with defining your target audience, niche, and content format to align with your goals. Choose a topic you’re experienced in and passionate about to become an authority your viewers trust.

Tip

Visit our blog for profitable Instagram niches.

Use different lengths

Instagram Reels creators have consistently asked for a longer time allowance, giving more opportunities for creativity.

Post long-form videos along with your shorter Instagram Reels content for variety.

Use the slider in the timer menu to increase your video length even after recording a clip.

Use captions and text overlays

Captions are essential for users with hearing disabilities, but did you know that up to 92% of people watch videos with the sound off?

People read text faster than spoken language, so adding captions can hook them in before they start scrolling away. Use online tools like Google Cloud TTS, Veed.io, or Transkriptor to transcribe your audio or do it manually.

Play around with speed, effects, and filters

Keep your videos clear of clutter, but use Instagram editing tools like special effects, filters, motion arrows, location tags, GIFs, and images when suitable to pump up engagement and entertainment value.

Add filters and effects by tapping the Stars icon to change shadows, color grading, and focus points, but don’t overdo it – excessive edits can make your Instagram Reels look low-quality and unrelatable.

Experiment with your video layout

Add multiple video sequences playing off one another on a single screen. You can use this effect to compare two different video clips, duet another artist, or jazz up your Instagram Reel with additional clips over the main video.

Reposting from TikTok? Think again

The Instagram algorithm de-prioritizes visible reuploads from other apps, which effectively shadowbans your content from the Reels tab and Explore page.

There are editing tools to erase the TikTok watermark, but this can reduce your video’s quality, so we recommend creating original Instagram Reel content instead. Reposted content will downgrade your brand image.

Hop on trends

Trends shift quickly, so when you spot one that fits your content, act fast. Share smaller trends in your Stories, and don’t hesitate to repost or reorder clips if a past topic resurfaces. Add relevant hashtags to increase engagement.

Here are a few 2024 trends to watch:

  • AI-generated content: Using AI tools for creative visuals, voiceovers, or captions is pretty popular.
  • Sustainability themes: Modern audiences really like content with eco-conscious themes.
  • Collaborative Reels: Partnering with influencers or brands for joint content is very common and a great way to monetize your Instagram Reels.
  • Behind-the-scenes footage: Audiences love authenticity and transparency, so show them what goes into your content.

Don’t limit yourself

Stay on top of new design software to make editing easier and more fun. Practice using additional lighting types and practical effects, and add music that goes along with your visuals.

Always push the boundaries of what other creators post in the Instagram Reels tab to get more viewers’ attention and grow your following.

FAQ

To create Instagram Reels:

  • Open Instagram and tap the + icon on your home screen.
  • Select the Reels tab, then either record video clips or upload pre-recorded ones.
  • Use Instagram’s editing tools like audio, effects, and captions to enhance your Reel.
  • After editing, click Next to add a caption and tags, and share your Reel.

Figuring out how to make Instagram Reels with photos and music, open the Reels tab and choose the gallery icon to select photos from your camera.

Put the photos in order, then tap the music note icon to add songs from the Instagram music library. Adjust the time each photo is displayed to match the beat of the music, add effects and filters, and then post the Reel as usual.

To create successful Reels with entertaining videos from your smartphone, select the gallery icon on the Reels creation screen. Select the videos you want to include and trim or rearrange them if needed. Then, add music, effects, or captions before finalizing and sharing your Reel.

It may take one or two Reels to get the hang of things, but if you follow the steps in this guide, you’ll be making Reels like a pro in no time!

Your business, your way – sell with Printify

Instagram brings together more than 28% of the world’s internet users. Among those people are your future customers.

In this article, you’ll learn how to create an Instagram business account to access features like post scheduling, paid ads, and analytics.

These tools will help you drive sales and increase your store’s revenue.

Create an Instagram business account in 7 easy steps

Setting up an Instagram professional account only takes a few minutes, and you’ll gain access to features that will help you run ads and promote posts for years.

Switch to a professional account from your Instagram personal profile to analyze and increase the number of people who see your posts.

Read our step-by-step guide on enabling this feature via your Instagram app:

1. Create an Instagram account

Use your existing profile or create a new account just for this purpose. It’s available on web browsers, but we recommend the Instagram app, as some features are only available there.

It’s free for iOS and Android devices.

2. Switch to a professional account

Switch to a Professional Account

New users have personal accounts by default. The switch to a professional account isn’t permanent – you can switch between personal, business, and creator accounts at any time.

Navigate to your Instagram Settings by tapping on the hamburger menu at the top right corner of your Instagram profile.

3. Tap account and switch

Tap Account and Switch

Scroll down and click Account → Switch to professional account. Later, you’ll be asked to select a creator account or business account.

A creator account is for public figures, content creators, artists, and influencers working on their brands, while Instagram business accounts are for retailers, local businesses, brands, organizations, and service providers.

Tap Account and Switch - Type

Remember that all business accounts are public, so you won’t have the option to have a private business account.

Switching back to a personal account will erase data from your business account. The system will turn off all in-app insights and permanently delete your content and ad insights.

4. Choose your category

Choose Your Category

Instagram will ask which field or profession best describes your business. If you don’t know how to define it, browse the suggested options to find the closest match.

Categories help the Instagram algorithm show your page to other Instagram users. You can change it anytime.

5. Add contact details

Add Contact Details

Your business page needs to include contact details in case shoppers have questions about your services or have encountered a problem.

Openness to communication cultivates customer trust and helps secure loyal shoppers in the long run.

Add your website address, business email address, phone number, and working hours. There’s also an option to link Instagram with WhatsApp Business for faster communication.

6. Connect a Facebook page

Connect a Facebook Page

Link your Instagram business account with your business Facebook Page to increase your brand’s exposure and access different audiences.

These two social media platforms go hand in hand, offering organic post-scheduling and content sharing with your customers.

Remember that your Instagram business account can only connect to one Facebook Page.

7. Finish setup

Finish Setup

That’s it! You’ve completed the Instagram business profile setup. Now go and try out all the features in your brand-new account.

The professional dashboard provides a complete overview of your account and post performance. It offers other account management tools like hiding your business category and adding contact information.

You’ll also see Instagram’s carefully curated content – from how to make Reels to working with brands.

Make it happen today!

Benefits of having an Instagram business account

The Instagram business profile has several features that will help grow your business but are unavailable on a personal profile.

If you already have a presence on Instagram through a personal account, a business profile could be your way to gain more followers and reach new audiences.

Access to analytics

Access to Analytics

See your business profile analytics through Account insights. You’ll find detailed information on how many profiles you’ve reached and engaged with through the Instagram feed or Explore.

Content interactions display the number of likes, saves, comments, and shares your posts have generated.

Profile activity shows profile visits, follows, and direct messages you’ve received in your inbox.

Audience insights break down demographics like gender, age, and approximate location of the people interacting with your posts. These insights will help you create more successful content.

Create Instagram ads

Advertising is an effective way to reach people and have them Buy Now or Learn More about your product or service. The idea behind Instagram ads is fairly simple – paid ads help you easily target specific audiences with little investment.

Be trustworthy

Use Instagram for business to gain the trust of your audience and translate it into sales.

Create content that resonates with your followers and engages them with your promoted posts.

Become a verified Instagram business profile – it’s the fastest and most secure way to build trust.

Request verification by tapping Settings → Account → Request verification. This is how your business profile gets the verified badge – a blue checkmark next to your business account name.

Tag and sell products

Tag and Sell Products

Instagram provides the necessary advertising tools for your products and makes buying them easy. Instagram business accounts and other qualified public accounts in select countries can add shopping tags to their Instagram posts.

Read our article on how to sell on Instagram to learn the technicalities of Instagram Shopping.

Add up to five products within a post and up to 20 in a carousel post. A carousel post lets you share ten photos or videos in one go.

Schedule posts and use links

Head over to the Creator Studio of the Facebook/Meta Business Suite and log in with your Instagram credentials to access various services for busy business owners.

Here, the most useful feature is post-scheduling, which is not something you’re currently able to use through your Instagram business account.

The Creator Studio dashboard gives you a clear timeline view for creating and scheduling posts and reviewing your current, past, and future scheduled posts. Don’t forget to add photos, videos, and any relevant links.

Run A/B testing with different text versions, photos, and videos to find the best-performing content for your audience.

Bring success to your Instagram business profile

Keep an eye on growing trends, but always stay authentic to your business niche.

Your goal is to reach customers with eye-catching Instagram Stories and posts and invite them to place an order. How can you achieve this? Let’s take a look!

Find your target audience

Find Your Target Audience

Start by defining your customer niche, creating buyer personas, and checking out our list of the top Instagram niches for 2025.

Remember that your audiences might vary across different platforms. For example, if you’ve linked your Instagram account with a business Facebook page, the message you share on Instagram might not work for your Facebook audience and vice versa.

Create and follow a strategy

Instagram marketing strategies are constantly evolving, so think of your business in the long term. Set relevant and achievable goals and objectives, and track your performance through Instagram insights.

Carry out A/B testing to see which marketing strategy works best for your Instagram business account, follow a marketing calendar with important eCommerce sales dates, and create a reliable posting schedule.

Prepare your Instagram

Make sure your Instagram business profile is ready to receive customers. In addition to a profile photo, you should have a bio, relevant website links, and your store’s contact information.

Group several Instagram Stories into highlights to feature them on your business profile for as long as you want.

Instagram archives standard Stories after 24 hours. Go to the Archive to view, repost, and highlight them. This is a great feature for reusing seasonal and holiday content.

Focus on visuals

Focus on Visuals

Instagram is a visual platform, so you’ll want to create Instagram business account images that catch and keep the attention of your target customers.

Create an engaging visual identity with high-quality Instagram content. A dazzling profile picture and complimentary visuals in your Instagram feed will do the trick.

Explore the benefits of creating Instagram Reels, which are 15-second multi-clip videos you can edit with creative tools.

Learn how to take product photos before making content to ensure your unique images turn into sales.

Excel at copywriting

Whether it’s your business Facebook account or Instagram profile, good copywriting draws people to your store. We can’t overstate its importance, so we won’t even try.

Consider every aspect of your customer journey, starting with viewing your small business from a personal profile and ending with placing an order.

Answer these questions:

  • How do you want your customer to perceive you?
  • Will you use casual or formal language?
  • Are you going to sound neutral, serious, funny, or a mix of all three?

Engage with your audience

People appreciate businesses that make an effort to connect with them. This is why you should consider replying to comments on your posts, Stories, and direct messages. Engage your customers by asking for feedback and work on creating a community.

Of course, that’s easier said than done – you can’t spend an entire day talking to customers. Thankfully, these useful tools will help you efficiently connect with your customers on another level.

Advertise your business

Run Instagram ads, use relevant hashtags, reach out to Instagram influencers to form collaborations, and use your Facebook Business Page and other social media channels to advertise your Instagram page.

Working out a solid Instagram marketing strategy will help you monetize your business. Keep in mind that sponsored content regulations may vary between countries.

FAQ

Create an Instagram business account by switching from your personal account to a professional one. Tap Settings. Scroll down and click Account → Switch account type.

Switch to a business or creator account based on your preferences at any time. Do it for free on the Instagram app.

An Instagram business account offers various analytics and advertising tools to find new customers and grow your business. You’ll be able to promote products on a schedule with different ad formats and use content analytics to work out a winning advertising strategy.

If you’re a business owner with only a personal account on Instagram, you are missing out on features that will help you grow your business.

Definitely! Switch back to a personal account in just a few steps – go to your Instagram Settings → Account → Switch account type and select the personal account.

Remember, switching back to a personal account will delete most of the data associated with your business account.

Instagram business profiles are best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organizations, and service providers, while creator accounts are for people with a personal brand – public figures, content producers, artists, and influencers.

You can add a shop through either of these Instagram profiles.

To monetize your audience with affiliate marketing:

How to make money on Instagram: Complete guide for [bp_year] 4

Instagram Reels lets creators earn money through ad placements and bonuses. It’s an excellent way to monetize short-form video content that your audience loves.

The Instagram Reels Play Bonus program rewards creators based on the performance of their Reels.

Here’s how to get income from Instagram by monetizing Reels:

  1. Create engaging, high-quality Reels that align with trending topics.
  2. Apply for Instagram’s Reels Play Bonus program once your account qualifies.

6. Brand partnerships and collaborations

Brand partnerships involve collaborating with businesses to create content that promotes their products or services.

This strategy can involve long-term relationships where you become a brand ambassador, representing the brand across your Instagram content.

To start brand partnerships:

  1. Reach out to brands that align with your content and audience.
  2. Propose creative collaboration ideas that highlight their products authentically.
  3. Share brand-related content on your feed using Instagram’s Paid Partnership feature.

These partnerships are often more lucrative than one-off sponsored posts and build deeper connections with the brands. Partnerships often offer free products that you can review, advertise, or place organically in your content.

Brands value long-term collaborations as they build trust and a consistent presence within a niche, helping both parties profit from a shared target audience.

7. Sell digital products

Offering digital products on Instagram like selling prints, artwork, music, eBooks, online courses, or design templates is easy to scale independently due to zero inventory or shipping concerns.

  2. Use eCommerce platforms or hosting websites to sell your products or services.
  3. Promote your digital products through Instagram posts, Stories, and Reels.

This method is a fantastic way to generate passive income since digital products can be sold multiple times with little effort.

  1. Enable Badges in your Instagram settings.
  2. Go live regularly to engage with your audience and encourage them to buy badges.
  3. Promote Badges during your live streams to remind viewers how they can support you.

Try to reciprocate the payment. Offer shoutouts or answers to questions for viewers who purchase badges to provide value for their purchase.

9. Promote services

Thinking of how you can make money on Instagram using a set of skills? Instagram is an excellent platform to market your services, whether you’re a photographer, personal trainer, or consultant in a particular field.

Highlight your expertise to attract clients.

11. Crowdfund your projects

Instagram audiences are great for crowdfunding. Create projects on platforms like Patreon or GoFundMe to ask for financial support in exchange for perks and exclusive content.

To start crowdfunding:

  1. Set up a crowdfunding page on your chosen platform.
  2. Promote your project in your Instagram content.
  3. Offer unique rewards for different contribution levels.

This is a good choice for funding art projects, charitable causes, or new products like games or media while building a sense of community around the work.

Keep your audience updated on your progress and celebrate milestones to maintain interest.

12. Provide account management services

If you’re an expert in social media marketing, content creation, or strategy, offer your services as a social media manager to other businesses or creators. Instagram already serves as a portfolio for your work.

To start offering marketing services:

  1. Highlight your skills by sharing tips, case studies, or examples of your work on Instagram.
  2. Include a call to action in your bio, directing potential clients to contact you.
  3. Use Instagram Stories and posts to advertise your services and success stories.

Social media manager services are in high demand, especially for smaller businesses looking to grow their online presence. This is definitely an earning method that could turn into a full-time job.

Having more followers certainly helps with larger brand deals and online store success, but it’s not the only requirement for earning on Instagram.

Instagram doesn’t directly pay users for likes. However, getting more likes on your image post or Instagram page can boost visibility, which may lead to brand deals and other opportunities. The focus is more on overall engaged followers, post reach, and interaction rather than just likes.

Instagram pays for photo and Reels views as part of their Bonus program. The amount they pay depends on your region and how much engagement your posts get. However, this is a limited-time program that’s currently in the testing phase, so check their news to get the most up-to-date info about how to make money from Instagram.

Brands may offer sponsored content based on the exposure and views your posts receive. If they see you’re getting a lot of attention, they’ll be more likely to want a partnership with you.

Yes, Instagram Reels can make money by boosting engagement with your Instagram profile. When you tag products from your online store in Reels or work with sponsored content, you can make more money through sales or promotions.

It’s also a great way to attract affiliate link clicks and gain loyal audience members to receive crowdfunding for future creative projects.

Instagram doesn’t directly pay users based on their follower count. However, with 1,000 engaged Instagram followers, many creators start earning money online through sponsored content, affiliate marketing, or running an online store.

The exact income depends on your unique brand, professional account metrics, the deals you secure, and how well you engage your audience.

How to sell t-shirts on instagram: Complete guide (2024)

If you’re new to selling products on Instagram and Facebook, the process can seem intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be! This guide will give you all the information you need to launch a successful shirt design business.

Prepare for take off

Prepare for Take Off
  1. Select a niche and define your target audience

Before you start creating your store, it’s important to think about what niche you’re going to sell in. What do people want? What are their pain points, and how can you solve them with a t-shirt?

Selecting a profitable niche and clearly understanding your target audience are the most important parts of launching an online t-shirt business. Check this article to learn more about profitable niches and how to find yours.

  1. Have clear goals and set KPIs

Once you have a niche and target audience, it’s time to set goals. What will your business do? How will it make money? This is where you need to define your store’s KPIs. A KPI (key performance indicator) is a metric that measures how well your business is performing. It’ll help you see if your actions are working and ensure you’re on track with your goals.

Set goals for the first year. You don’t want to set unrealistic goals for your first year and then get disappointed when you can’t meet them. Make sure that the goals are realistic, achievable, and measurable.

This will help you know what to focus on and how to measure your success. You should have a general idea of what your store will look like, but don’t try and create everything in one day. Instead, take it one step at a time; start small and build up until you get bigger than expected.

  1. Be sure to have a distinct brand

Once you have your goals and KPIs set, it’s time to start building your brand. Your brand should have a personality and tone of voice. This will help you define your niche as well as your target audience. For example, if you’re starting a clothing store for plus-size women, it’s important to know that they’re looking for items that make them feel good about themselves and their bodies.

There’s a general rule called the four V’s of branding:

  • Visual: How does your brand look? What colors, fonts, photos, and videos are you using on your website and social media?
  • Verbal: What are customers saying about your brand? Are they talking about how great or poor quality the print on your shirts is?
  • Verification: What kind of content do you produce that helps build customer trust?
  • Value proposition: What exactly are you offering customers that makes buying from you worth their time and money? For example, suppose your business is a t-shirt brand. Then, you could use the four V’s of branding to explain that your company has an eye-catching logo, offers high-quality products at affordable prices, creates engaging social media content, and influences marketing campaigns.

Setup Instagram shopping

  1. Make sure that selling on Instagram is right for you

Instagram Shopping is a great way to make money with your Instagram account. However, it’s important that you make the right decisions and set things up correctly before you begin selling on Instagram. Make sure that this is a good fit for your brand:

  • Your business needs to have its own website. Your Instagram shop must feature product listings that can be bought directly from your company’s website, and you must represent the shop or website linked to the specified URL.
  • To ensure that you sell only eligible items and adhere to Instagram’s policies, including their commerce policies, terms of use, community guidelines, and more, review their Commerce Eligibility Requirements.
  • Make sure your business is located in a supported market.
  • Set up a Business Manager account to open a store in Commerce Manager. There you can manage your ad accounts, pages, and the people who have access to them.
  1. Change your Instagram account to a business account
Change Your Instagram Account to a Business Account

Once you’ve decided you want to sell on Instagram, the next step is to change your personal account into an Instagram business account. This allows you to link it with other platforms such as Shopify or WooCommerce, so when a customer purchases something from your website, they’re automatically tagged in their Instagram Stories as having bought from you.

An Instagram business account will also allow you access to features like insights and analytics and add information and a shopping bag icon.

  1. Connect with an existing eCommerce platform

Instagram integrates with eCommerce platforms like Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, WooCommerce, Zentail, CommerceHub, and others.

You can add goods to your catalog in Commerce Manager if they’re hosted on a partner platform that integrates with Facebook. Following that, you may keep maintaining items on your partner platform, and updates will sync automatically to the Commerce Manager.

Once your catalog has items, you can start selling from an online store in Commerce Manager or create ads that include your products in Facebook Ads Manager.

  1. Select a sales channel

Once you’ve set up your account, you need to select a sales channel – whether the only place you sell is Instagram, a Facebook business page, or both social media platforms. Setting up a Facebook business page and linking your Instagram account to it is a great way to cross-promote and sell t-shirts to your audience.

  1. Select a Checkout Method

There are three checkout methods for your Instagram t-shirt business:

  • Checkout with Facebook or Instagram (only available in the US)
  • Checkout on another website
  • Checkout in DMs
  1. Add products

There are two ways of adding t-shirts and other products to your brand new Instagram t-shirt business:

  • Link to an existing product catalog. Choose a Shopify or other eCommerce catalog. Open your business profile in the Instagram app and go to Settings. There, tap Business > Shopping, and confirm your Facebook account. Choose the product catalog to connect and tap Done.
  • Create a new catalog. Go to your shop and tap the menu in the upper right corner. Tap Manage products > Add new. Add an image of the product, create a description (be as thorough as possible to help your customers find your t-shirts better), then tap Save.
  1. Submit for review and wait for approval

Now, all you have to do is wait for Instagram to review and approve your products. After that, they’ll appear in your Instagram profile.

Now it’s time to market your store

  1. Prepare a content plan

To ensure your Instagram t-shirt business is bringing in what you hope, it’s crucial to have a content plan. Posting haphazardly will only get you so far. Plan your content calendar, so you know what you’re posting daily.

A content calendar is your roadmap to help you meet your t-shirt sales goals, set dates for campaigns, and plan engagement posts. You don’t have to sell in every post – add some inspirational, educational, and motivational content, too.

In the content calendar, mark on which days you’re going to promote your products, which days are days for your best Instagram Stories showing off your products, and on which days you’re going to post other types of content.

  1. Select appropriate hashtags
Select Appropriate Hashtags

When creating Instagram posts and Stories, your photo captions should contain hashtags. You can even create a unique hashtag for your brand.

A metadata tag that begins with the symbol # is known as a hashtag. Hashtags are a type of user-generated tagging used on social media to facilitate cross-referencing information by topic or theme.

Hashtags are essential for growing your Instagram audience, gaining more reach, and increasing sales. When you add hashtags to the post, it will show on the page for that hashtag. Adding hashtags to Stories will also show on the appropriate hashtag page.

If you’re having trouble coming up with hashtags, use hashtag generators like Display Purposes to ease the process.

  1. Create a free giveaway

People. Love. Free. Stuff. Organizing a t-shirt giveaway is one of the most effective ways of bringing in Instagram followers. To get the maximum out of it, ask your participants to not only like the post but also reshare it to their Instagram Stories, tag friends in the comments section, and even mention their favorite product.

For full transparency, thoroughly describe the t-shirt giveaway details and provide the following information:

After your giveaway concludes, contact your winner in direct messages to find out their location, size, etc., to ship them your awesome t-shirt with a beautiful print that they will hopefully flaunt in their Instagram Stories, thus getting your brand out there.

  1. Engage with influencers and affiliate marketers
Engage With Influencers and Affiliate Marketers

Consider adding influencer marketing to your t-shirt business marketing campaign, as influencer marketing is still going strong. In 2023, 63% of marketers plan to increase their influence marketing budget – that’s how effective it is! Let’s be honest – most of us have bought something off of Instagram recently just because someone we like has worn it oh so beautifully on their Instagram profile.

One more marketing strategy for boosting sales is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a marketing strategy where content creators earn a commission by promoting a product – in this case, custom t-shirts, by using an affiliate link that they add to their website or social network.

A popular way of sharing affiliate links is through Instagram Stories. When a person clicks the link and makes a purchase, the content publisher earns a commission of every such purchase.

  1. Start an Instagram ad campaign

If you wish to offer custom t-shirts on Instagram, it’s not enough to just post pretty pictures with your t-shirt designs. Organic reach today is as rare as unfiltered selfies – Instagram’s algorithms are kinder to those who pay, and that’s where Instagram ad campaigns come in.

Instagram ads look like regular posts that you can see all over the Instagram app – on your timeline as photos and videos, in Stories and Reels. What sets them apart from regular posts is the “Sponsored” tag above every post, plus a call-to-action (CTA) button that nudges people to Buy Now or Learn More.

  1. Engage with your community

Be a t-shirt brand that actively engages with its followers. Respond to user comments, and repost their posts and Stories – user-generated content

This niche is evergreen as more people push to live more healthy lives. In the UK eCommerce market, 80% of adults have changed their lifestyle to be healthier in 2021. Instagram is a great platform for those looking for content on workouts, fitness routines, healthy products or nutrition information.

It is a competitive niche, so standing out and originality can play a crucial role in building effective Instagram accounts. You can monetize these Instagram pages with products, services or affiliate marketing.

Within this niche, the global market for sports and fitness apparel will reach $221.3 Billion by 2026. With such strong growth predicted, creating your own fitness merchandise can be a way of making money. Check out our handy How to Create Your Own Fitness Merch guide to learn more.

6. Food niche

Top 9 profitable Instagram niches for [bp_year] 9

Don’t forget your phone eats first! Instagram posts of food are some of the most popular content on the platform. Food is an important part of everybody’s daily lives and this makes food one of the best Instagram niches. The hashtag #food is used for over 250 million posts a month!

You can use Instagram to drive traffic to your online store. Complement an Instagram post of your product or service, with engaging content like recipes or cooking hacks. From there, an Instagram profile makes money through affiliate products, advertisements or their own offering.

To get your Instagram profile featured, you can participate in contests like the #foodchallengenetwork and #foodchallenges pages. Using the top food hashtags may not get your Instagram post much attention because they are so popular and highly competitive.

One of the social media marketing tips to take away from the food industry is to post your own food challenge and create your own hashtag. Once others participate, your Instagram page can gain visibility, your food posts may be shared, and you can expand your reach.

7. Lifestyle niche

The idea of the individual as a brand has developed on Instagram over time, from a photo-sharing app to the birthplace of selfies and influencers. Now, 80% of Instagram’s daily content is dedicated to our own lifestyles.

The vast majority of Instagram posts are in this niche because there is significant overlap with a range of other niches. The average Instagram user spends 53 minutes a day on the app. People have always been interested in other people’s lives, and this makes it one of the most profitable niches due to popularity.

You can create content that builds on your daily life. Posts can range from everyday activities to passions or insights that align with the interests of your audience. Accounts in this niche tend to stick within a few categories that overlap with other niches, like the music niche, young moms and other parents, the fitness industry or fashion niche.

Many lifestyle bloggers make money on Instagram through brand partnerships like sponsored posts, affiliate deals with other brands, earning commission from sales referrals, or offering products related to the content of the Instagram account.

8. Crafts and DIY niche

The eCommerce DIY and crafts markets have experienced strong growth from 2020 onwards. The r/DIY subreddit has grown to over 20 million members, and the US DIY market is projected to reach over $620 billion in 2025.

The rising popularity of the craft market in the US is summed up by The New York Times:

“Stuck at home without the diversions of socializing, travel, or dining out, the crafting continued. Americans knitted, crocheted and wove through the lockdown. They made hand-tufted rugs, paper orchids, wooden chess sets, tiny shrines and botanical mandalas.”

Building on an interest in DIY or crafts can be one of the best niches to make money doing something you love. You can capture users’ imagination and create demand using the same materials and methods in your content.

9. Business niche

Entrepreneurship is predicted to soar in 2022, with a record 17 million small businesses forecast to launch in the US alone. A lot of people don’t know where to start, creating a lot of opportunities for content creation.

This can be the best Instagram niche if you are entrepreneurial and looking to make money yourself. Apply everything you have learned to make money. You can create an account that offers business tips, quotes, useful tips, marketing strategies or startup ideas. There is a huge range of potential content focused on how to make money available!

Similar to all the best niche ideas, the most popular can already be saturated with wonder brands. Like the fashion niche, music industry, or beauty brand you can create unique and original content to stand out. You can use social proof to build trust and show you are a successful business. Demonstrating real success can help you thrive and grow your account.

Benefits of finding a niche on Instagram

Here are four quick benefits of finding a niche on Instagram.

1. Stand out

The more unique you are, the less competition you will have. Niche products can be really different from standard products offered and help your store stand out, helping you make money.

Standing out can make your product more memorable and potential buyers will remember your store. Without an Instagram niche, people are likely to forget your store.

2. Easy to identify and target potential customers

The more specific an Instagram niche is, the more effective your targeting of potential customers can become. The number of people interested in your niche is less than its more mainstream equivalent. Because of this, identifying potential customers within your target audience can be easier.

You can also easily partner with influencers who are already well established within the specific niche you’re targeting. This can not only drive traffic to your store, but can also help build trust in your brand.

This laser-focused targeting of potential customers within your Instagram niche can make your marketing efforts much more effective and less complex.

3. Easier to become an expert and well known within your niche

Within an Instagram niche, you can become established and well known in a shorter amount of time than in a more mainstream market. As this group is targeted and smaller, it can be easier to become known as a specialist or expert within your Instagram niche.

Cian McGloughlin, Founder and CEO of Trinity Perspectives, break this concept down:

“The biggest mistake most small businesses make is trying to be all things to all people, assuming this will give them access to the largest addressable market.”

If you position yourself as an expert in a range of markets to access the largest possible market, you risk diluting your value to your potential customers. Zeroing in on a particularly profitable Instagram niche and growing a loyal following can help you grow your online store’s sales.

4. Easier to adapt to emerging trends

When it comes to Instagram trends, change is the only constant. Keeping up with digital trends can help you find profitable niche ideas. If you can adapt your content to a trend you think will blow up, then there is the potential for strong growth.

Social media trends are in a state of constant evolution. Instagram’s algorithm was a mystery for a while. However, CEO Adam Mosseri has now broken down  the key factors that influence how content is ranked on Instagram’s blog.

You can check out these insights into what content makes its way onto a user feed to help your niche content rank:

  • The popularity of a post is determined on the basis of the number of likes, the location added to the post, and the length of the post in case it is a video
  • The latest engagement of users with a specific account
  • The number of posts of the user that have been liked
  • User interaction with other accounts

Resembling the success and profitability of TikTok videos, Instagram Reels are shaping up to become one of the best ways to make money on the platform. User feeds get personalized with reels they’d want to see, turning it into a very useful tool for reaching your niche audience.

If you’re a current or future Instagram creator, you need to know how to make money from what you do. In this blog, you’ll learn how to get paid for Reels or use alternative methods to earn money on Instagram.

Reasons to monetize Instagram Reels

Reels have an average view rate of 1.95%, which significantly surpasses the view rate for images, videos, and carousels posted on Instagram. On top of that, these reels are not only for the big fish – accounts with under 5,000 followers have the highest reach rates.

This means more exposure, an increased following, and more opportunities to earn money through your Instagram creator or business accounts.

Five ways to get paid for Instagram Reels

There are numerous ways in which posting entertaining reels on the Instagram app can make extra money – regardless of whether you’re a creative or a business owner. All you need is an Instagram Creator Account and a solid monetization plan.

Instagram personalizes the content users see, giving you direct access to your target audience and future loyal customers.

Remember to stay simple and authentic in the content you share to ensure a steady customer conversion.

Another way to earn money using Instagram Reels, photos, or videos is to offer digital marketing services to brands that align with your niche audience by engaging in influencer marketing.

Brands are always on the lookout for energetic influencers to help them reach their target audiences, giving you an opportunity to gain brand sponsorship.

The bare minimum required for this is to generate quality content that speaks to the audience your target brand wants to reach.

Make sure to have at least a few quality posts or Reels with a decent number of plays to share in your portfolio before you approach a brand with your offer.

Alternatively, work with other Instagram influencers to showcase your products to their followers.

Pro tip

Go to Klear, Grin, or Upfluence if you’re looking for an easy-to-use platform that connects influencers with brands.

Let’s dig in!

Make your own shirt today

Just like in an actual store we check out particular clothes because we like what we see, the same happens in an online store. What it means to you as a custom t-shirt seller is that you have to be extra attentive when choosing photos for your clothing. Especially when it comes to ads.

In this blog post, we’re exploring tips on matching the right visuals and text to promote your t-shirt brand on social media. Let’s dig in!

Get the visuals to work with: arrange a photo shoot of your t-shirt brand

How to promote a t-shirt brand with social media advertising 12

First things first. To create great ads on social media, you need to have great photos. If you’re selling your merchandise, this means you’ll need to organize a photo shoot. While it may take a little bit of your time, it’s not as difficult as it may sound. Here are some tips for getting perfect photos for your clothing brand.

Prepare your clothes

You need to prepare the items you want to be selling before the photo shoot. Now, this may seem pretty straightforward, but some merchants tend to overlook it.

Who likes ironing, right? Especially when you can edit the photos with Photoshop or other tools. But here’s the risk. For one, if you’re not a Photoshop master, editing out a stain or a wrinkle from a t-shirt might take longer than actually washing your t-shirt or ironing it. Plus, too much photo editing, if not done right, will make your product look even worse.

Make sure your t-shirts are spotlessly clean, have no wrinkles, or creases for the best look.

Arrange your photo shoot set

How to promote a t-shirt brand with social media advertising 13

You don’t need to go to a professional studio to get the photos right. With just a couple of things, you can arrange the photo shoot at home or anywhere you wish. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Camera. If you don’t have one, a smartphone with a good camera will do, too.
  • Tripod. Whether you’re using a professional camera or a phone, a tripod is a must-have for stability.
  • Natural light. This one is easy, too. If you have a window, you have natural light – it will help to ‘shape’ your products better. But if you have or want to invest in artificial lighting gear, that will help you lots when there’s not enough natural light coming from your window, or when it changes.
  • Model. Don’t photograph your t-shirts on a hanger – people need to see how your clothing looks on an actual human. But if you can’t get anyone to pose for your photos, get a mannequin – it works, too.
Tip

You can use Placeit or Printify’s Product Creator (formerly known as Mockup Generator) as an alternative.

Add the final touches with photoshop

How to promote a t-shirt brand with social media advertising 14

There still are some final fixes, such as adjusting the colors. Like red, some of them might need to be edited a little since it’s more challenging to get it right during the photo shoot. You may also want to play with white balance, contrast, or add some branding like logos to your photos for consistency.

Photo ideas for apparel ads

How to promote a t-shirt brand with social media advertising 15

Now that we got the overall idea of a clothing photo shoot covered, here are some additional ideas on how to best showcase your brand.

Use emotions. Shoot your models in action. For instance, you could have a couple wearing your t-shirts while acting cute or funny. Your photos will look more relatable, and the positive emotions will extend to your products, too.

Be dynamic. Get your models to pose in different positions – standing, jumping, sitting. This will help you to showcase your products from various angles.

Try different scenarios. Depending on what you want to say with your brand, you could show your clothing in many different situations. For example, you could have your photo shoot in a park, in a coffee shop, at home… You can recreate a working environment or a brunch with friends. You can be more down-to-earth or go for a more fancy look. By trying different ideas outside your home studio, you will have more natural-looking photos and will be able to appeal to wider audiences.

Adjust your photos for social media advertising. Once you have your photos done, it’s time to adapt them for multiple uses. In this post, we’re focusing on photos for ads on social media, so here are some pointers on requirements to follow.

Image requirements for Facebook ads

There are many different ad placements on Facebook – starting from your usual news feed ad to an ad messenger. If you want to know which type of Facebook ad fits you best, look at this Facebook ads guide for beginners. But for now, let’s look purely at the image requirements for some of the most familiar types of Facebook ads.

Facebook feed images

Used for ads that appear in your Facebook feed.

  • File type: jpg or png
  • Animated GIFS need to be uploaded as a video ad
  • Image ratio: 1.91:1 to 4:5 (1.91:1 to 1:1 with link)
  • Use the highest resolution image available
  • Have no more than 20% text on the image
Tip

Read more here to make sure your image and text ratio is good to go.

Facebook stories images

Used for ads that appear between user stories.

  • Image ratio: 1.91 to 9:16
  • Use the highest resolution image available
  • Leave about 14% (250px) of the top and bottom of the image with no text or logos (otherwise, you’re risking covering important information)

Facebook right column images

Used for ads that usually appear in the right-hand column of Facebook pages when browsing on desktop.

  • File type: jpg or png
  • Animated GIFS need to be uploaded as a video ad
  • Image ratio: 1.91:1 to 1:1
  • Text is not recommended on images because these type of ads are quite small

Images that consist of more than 20% text may experience reduced delivery.

Image requirements for Instagram ads

When launching ads on Facebook, you can also choose placements on Instagram, such as feed and stories. Below are the main requirements for images.

Instagram feed images

Used for ads that appear in your Instagram feed.

  • File type: jpg or png
  • Animated GIFS need to be uploaded as a video ad
  • Use the highest resolution image available
  • Recommended aspect ratio: 1.9:1 (landscape), 1:1 (square), or 4:5 (vertical).

Instagram stories mages

Used for ads that appear between user stories.

  • File type: jpg or png
  • Image ratios: 9:16 and 16:9 to 4:5
  • Recommended resolution: 1080 x 1920px

Just like with Facebook ads, don’t forget not to overload Instagram ad images with text, too!

Add great copy to your ads

Read the tips below to find out what kind of text will make your potential customers to increase your Shopify store sales.

  1. Step into your client’s shoes. Don’t just talk about how great your brand is. Talk about how great the person reading your ad will feel in your t-shirt.
  2. Use numbers. Have a discount? Spell it out! Numbers and good offers attract attention.
  3. Be concise. Sometimes you may need to tell a longer story. However, as a general rule, the shorter your ad text, the better. People have a short attention span, especially when scrolling through their social media feeds. You need to get their attention with the first words and make them interested with a few lines. Leave the details for your product page.
  4. Test. Write a few different versions of copy and run several ads where everything is the same (image, targeting, placement) except the text. This way you’ll see what kind of copy works best for a particular audience.
  5. Use value propositions. How are your t-shirts different from your competitors? What makes them special, unique? Use this information in your copy.
  6. Be consistent. Most people need to see your brand several times before they will have enough trust or interest to check you out. The more consistent your messaging is across different channels, the better for your brand recognition.

If you’re looking for an eCommerce marketplace instead of a dedicated platform – have a look at our guide on Etsy Advertising.

Go an extra mile to maximize your chances of selling

Below are some examples of great Facebook and Instagram ads to give you an idea of what works well. Even though some of the ads are not from the apparel industry, you can still learn a lot from them.

Pro tip

Look at well-performing brands from other industries and test their successful marketing ideas. Instead of copying your direct competitors, you’ll stand out from them! And to go even further, make sure to follow a marketing metrics guide to track your progress.

Be creative with visuals

This ad by MeUndies shows a great way to use carousel ads on Facebook. Instead of posting a series of different products in one campaign, they chose to divide one photo into several parts to create a catchy ad.

Appeal to aspirations

Who likes having too many meetings? Judging from the number of memes about it online, pretty much no one. Slack’s team cleverly used this fact to showcase how their product can solve this problem. What kind of outfit problems can your t-shirts solve?

Get personal

Storytelling is still big in the marketing world. What kind of story can you tell with your brand? Maybe you could use your story about how you created your brand. Or maybe people who buy your t-shirts would like to tell their stories about how your t-shirts empower them? Either way, this kind of content can fuel your social media campaigns and even lead to greater content opportunities if you choose to start a blog and begin telling longer-form stories in the form of articles, case studies, or guides for your customers to learn from. The possibilities are huge here!

Final words

To sum it up, if you want to sell your t-shirts on social media, you need to take your photos seriously – apparel buyers are very visual. Combined with a great copy and some technical knowledge (you need to know how to crop your photos), you will be just fine!
